Patrick Mahomes, Chiefs joke on Elon Musk Twitter policy

Twitter and Elon Musk recently announced that the social network company would be ending legacy verified accounts and that if anyone wanted to retain their blue checkmark, they would have to pay for Twitter Blue.

While Musk has since softened his stance on companies, the controversial billionaire and Twitter CEO had dug his heels in regarding individuals and maintains that they will still need to pay $8/month to maintain their verification status.

This has taken Twitter by storm and has led to many celebrities and professional athletes spoofing the idea. That includes Kansas City Chiefs star quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who retweeted LeBron James’s tweet about not paying for the monthly fee and made an off-hand comment about potentially losing his verification status.

“When are they taking away our check?” Mahomes jokingly tweeted.

One of Mahomes’ teammates — Chiefs wide receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling — quoted his quarterback’s tweet, asking for him to “Pay the $8 for the guys.”

Mahomes was quick to fire off a witty response, as the 27-year-old quarterback now has two kids with his wife, Brittany. And despite his massive contract, he’s not going to be paying $8 monthly for 51 other teammates and Valdes-Scantling.

We’ll have to see how this plays out, but Twitter becomes a much different place if athletes like Patrick Mahomes and LeBron James don’t maintain their verification status in the coming days.
